A Twist on Evil

I’ll have to warn you of two things: 1) this might be a tad complicated if you aren’t used to thinking this way, 2) this is a long post. I’ve been contemplating this thought for quite awhile. I wasn’t sure if it made sense when I first thought it… and I’m still not sure now. You’ve been warned! You may continue. Here’s the thought:
Evil is evidence for the existence of God.
If I left it at that, you might be confused. You see, the “problem of evil” is a common argument used AGAINST the existence of God. Am I really going to turn it around and say it points to the supernatural*?
Yes, I am.
However, before the atheist laughs at me as a lunatic and the Christian burns me to the stake as a heretic, hear me out. It makes a little sense to me. Maybe it will to you, as well.
I will create two arguments showing that evil is evidence for God.
Evil Is Another Difference between Animals and Humans
Animals are not evil. When they do what humans would call “evil” activities, it’s solely for personal gain. They will hunt other animals for food or for the pure enjoyment of the chase. They will kill to defend themselves or their fellow species. They do everything for their own benefit or the benefit of their kind.
Put another way, they do NOTHING simply because it is destructive or painful to some other animal. They do not harm another creature just so that creature can suffer or die. They are not evil. At worst, they are selfish.
Humans are different. We are “evil” in the pure sense of the word. We do things not only for our own benefit (like animals), but because it will cause other humans pain.
Think about it. We deliberately injure people mentally, physically, and emotionally. We derive PLEASURE out of the sufferings of other humans. We enjoy it when other people are having a crummy day.
I sure hope I don’t have to give examples. If you want some, just Google something like “do people enjoy other people suffering?”. Bottom line: animals are not wicked; humans are. This wickedness is just one more thing that separates humans and animals.
You have to understand that atheists cannot have this distinction. For atheism to be true, we have to be animals, albeit more advanced ones. But we have to be animals.
This wickedness that humans are capable of points to the fact that we are not animals. If we are not animals, we could not have evolved from them. If we didn’t evolve from animals, we had to be made supernaturally. This points to God.
Why is this so? Simply because the evil humans can do would not be possible if we were just animals. There had to be something different about us, something that gives us the capability to do tremendous good, or tremendous evil. Animals do not have this capability; they just live to survive. Wickedness is just one more area** in which animals are nothing like humans.
Evil Points to the Demonic World
Not only do atheists have to deny the existence of God, they also have to deny angels and demons, as well. The Bible makes it very clear that the spiritual world is alive and “well” (if you want to call it that). Satan and his followers are an unfortunate part of this existence. They influence us to do that which is evil.
“Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walks about, seeking whom he may devour…” (1 Peter 5:8)
The terrorism, forced hunger, sex trafficking, and many other behaviors we see all around the world points to a darker force. Again, simple animals would not be able to nor care to do the evil we do everyday. This points to the supernatural. Here’s an example:
“Pedro Alonso López is a Colombian serial killer, accused of raping and killing more than 300 girls across South America was believed to have preyed on young and vulnerable girls in Peru. He lured them to secluded areas or inside unoccupied buildings where he raped each of them before killing them by a range of brutal methods, primarily strangulation. López was arrested when an attempted abduction failed and he was trapped by market traders. He confessed to over 300 murders. The police only believed him when a flash flood uncovered a mass grave containing many of his victims. Eventually 53 bodies were discovered.”
The atheist does not have an answer for this brutality. No animal would ever consider doing anything close to this. There is no evolutionary reason for what he did. This can be explained by invoking demonic influence, however.
The wickedness of humankind points to the supernatural.
To Summarize
Does evil point to the existence of God? I would say so. It is clear as day that we are nothing like animals. The way we live is so different. Evil is just another example of that.
Hopefully what I wrote made a little sense. I’ve been thinking of it for awhile and had to write it down. Evil is so often used against the existence of God… but I really think that it points to both His existence and to the demonic.
Make sure to read my usual mandatory disclaimer below***!
*This is basically the flip side of the morality argument for the existence of God. Morality points to God (the morality argument), but so does immorality (my argument).
**Other areas being morality, rationality, spirituality, etc.
***No, I’m not blaming God for our wickedness. I’m saying that evil points to the supernatural, and therefore to God. How our world came to be this bad does not fall under the scope of this post.
